Greece and PIGS crisis no longer make the headlines. WTO negotiations are on full swing. On the other hand Brent crude trading at USD 116 is giving jitters to the Indian economy.

On the 31st of July, Mumbai witnessed yet another edition of Mandi, the unique on field marketing exercise conducted by NITIE. This event is part of NITIE’s unequalled action learning pedagogy, in which first year management students hit the streets of Mumbai selling educational toys. This year, the event scaled new heights and was rechristened MahaMandi 2010, as the students from NITIE invited their counterparts from some of the other top post graduate colleges in Mumbai – SJMSOM IIT Bombay, Wellingkar, SIMSR and TISS. More than 800 students spread out to different parts of Mumbai to sell the educational toys manufactured by Navnirmiti, an NGO working for the upliftment of underprivileged children.
Conceptualized by Dr T. Prasad (Senior Faculty – NITIE), this event originated from the belief that experiential learning in terms of a field marketing experience is as important as classroom training and education. Dr. Prasad says – “MahaMandi serves as an effective vehicle for three objectives. Firstly, it contributes to Navnirmiti, thus helping make a difference in the lives of many children who lose out on basic education. Secondly, it provides our students with a practical experience of classroom concepts like Marketing and Direct Selling. Thirdly, the toys sold are essentially educational tools that have been deployed by the NGO in many schools across the country.”
The event was flagged off from the beautiful campus of NITIE by Mr. Rajit Kapur (of Byomkesh Bakshi fame), Amol Mazumdar (Indian cricketer) and Rehan yar Khan (Founder at Flora2000 Inc).

After the inauguration ceremony, students started towards their chosen destinations to sell their products. They tried to woo customers at shopping malls, railway stations and other busy intersections in areas like Powai, Bandra, Dadar, Churchgate and CST. The toys on offer were Tangram, ‘Jodo’ Sets, Number balance and Navrang. Mrs. Beena Gite, a working mother of two said, “For me, these toys will serve as a new and unique way to teach mathematical concepts apart from the conventional method of teaching through school textbooks.” The sales for the day were an overwhelming Rs 10, 00,000.

The students describe their experience at MahaMandi- “This was a very enriching and fun filled experience for me as I got to interact directly with so many customers and learnt how to effectively make a sales pitch to them” said Maulik Desai, a first year student at NITIE.

It was a huge success with participation of 34 volunteers from the management students. A bus was organized to drop the students at the plantation site at Bhavale. The group set forth for the journey at 6:30 AM in the morning. The drive was very refreshing and appeasing to the eye. The greenery of the pastures and freshness in the air delighted everyone. On reaching the plantation site, a team of Hariyali veterans received the group and gave instructions on the day’s plans. Hariyali has a nursery at Thane, where seeds are planted in small plastic covers and allowed to grow to a certain height. Those saplings were then moved to the Bhavale hills plantation site during the rainy season as the chance of their survival is more at this time.

All the volunteers were excited to be in the midst of nature, with rain playing hide and seek all the time. Everyone toiled hard for 3 hours and the operation resulted in successful plantation of about 90 plants. The site had a reservoir as a part of the water conservation initiative. There were multiple groups volunteering on the same day and many corporates and college students had come to spend a day doing something worthwhile for mother nature. After the plantation, the group was taken for a tour around the hills which had wonderful views of some caves, reservoirs and waterfalls. It was a day that all the volunteers would remember and cherish for a long time to come.

The initiative was a huge success with a total of 84 units of blood being collected during the 5 hours of the camp. Out of the 110 students who turned up for the camp, 26 had to turn back disappointed as they did not qualify due to health reasons. The event was conducted under the aegis of Rotary club of Powai. It was nice to see the management students of NITIE take part voluntarily for a good cause and especially at a time when the blood bank had a Shortage of blood. The event resulted in creating awareness among many first time donors about the benefits of donating blood. It also dispelled many a myth about the safety concerns attached to it. The donors were given certificates as an act of appreciation for donating blood. They were also given complementary caps from Samarpan blood bank which carried the message on importance of blood donation. India lags behind in voluntary blood collected from its people and the youth of today have to show the way forward in improving the situation.

Groove, the official ‘welcome’ by the final year students to the freshmen, started on the 17th of June, 2010. It aimed to break the ice and establish a sense of camaraderie among the students. It was meant to offer them their first glimpse into the life that NITIE had to offer: sleepless nights, enthralling tasks and a lot of fun!
The first day started with an orientation session by the Dean (Academics) and a number of other faculty members. As soon as that was over, a plethora of events that included introductions, impromptu performances, games gauging team work and leadership, set the tone for the next 3 days. Work on a case study on finance, prepared by $treet, the finance forum, extended late into the night (and for some even early in the morning) for the freshmen. This is when most of them got a chance to have their first night snack at campus outlet of Nescafe.
The second day started with a morning walk around the campus. After having slept as late as 6 am, having spent the entire night deciphering the cryptic finance case, the serene environs of the campus were a little difficult to appreciate. But curiosity got the better of a few students. Questions ranged from favourite hang outs in the campus to leopards visiting the place! However the panoramic view of the college, flanked by the Powai and Vihar Lakes and the view of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park from the MDP Hostel rooftop aptly compensated the stress of the students.
The second day was packed once again. The marketing case studies saw some creative ideas being put forth, making judges hard to pick the winner. In the group skits, the performance of Dinesh as ‘Aag’ was an absolute show stealer, so much so that his team is often requested, to this date, for an encore of that act. The second night was reserved for an SCM case study. With hopes of garnering Pre Placement Interviews from C2X (the SCM forum), the freshmen spent another sleepless night engrossed in concepts such as supply-demand constraints and performance improvements.
The third day witnessed the introduction of the now infamous and highly addictive game called ‘Mafia’. The evening saw the campus being enthralled by two illustrious alumni from HSBC and E&Y. They shared their memories of the campus, their experiences in campus and the transition into corporate life, among others. The third day also had a lot of activities that aimed at getting the freshmen to know each other better and make new friends.
Being a student at NITIE, life somehow doesn’t seem to stop. As someone said, “I have been a part of NITIE for only a few weeks now, yet I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t living here, when I didn’t have coffee and Maggi at Nescafe at 2am or when I didn’t know the people who have become such an integral part of my life. You get surprised by the humongous talent of people around you and at the same time humbled by their docility.”

Ronald McDonald, the affable mascot of McDonald has today become a part of us. But it wasn’t an easy entry into India, neither into the country nor in the hearts and minds of the Indian consumer. Mr. Singal spoke about the unique challenges McDonald’s had to face in India. Most of us know that McDonald’s opened its first outlet in India in 1996. But the groundwork started in early 1990’s. It took them close to six years to crack the Indian market. From setting up its Supply Chain, to getting the product mix right; they had to do it all. The biggest challenge of all was to reach out to the masses. A self service restaurant model wasn’t something Indians were too familiar with back in the 1990s. Moreover, given the religious & cultural sensitivities, they had to customize their menu to suit the Indian platter. So the Big Mac took a Maharaja Mac avatar and the Mc Aaloo Tikki burger and the Paneer Salsa wrap were specially made for the Indian Markets. That apart, McDonald’s faced the challenge of being perceived as an ‘elitist’ joint. It was here that the “aap ke zaamane mein baap ke zaamne ke daam” campaign did the trick. The Rs. 20/- menu proved to be watershed moment for McDonald’s. The common Indian consumer lapped up McDonald’s and no wonder McDonald’s growth story is cited as a prime example of how companies can carve a niche in the Indian market.

An enriching session, it left us NITIE junta chanting “B-Gyan…we’re lovin it!”

NITIE campus was bubbling with activities on March 21st, 2010. All the Rotaract Club of Powai, NITIE members, doctors, and volunteers waited for the clock to tick 10, when the camp would start. The eagerness and enthusiasm on the face of locals made them start early.

In its endeavour to give back to the community, Rotaract Club of Powai, NITIE organized a free medical health camp for the underprivileged around NITIE on 21st March 2010. The aim of the camp was to provide medical facilities to the people who find it difficult to visit doctors for any ailments due to their limited means. More than 100 eye check-ups and 50+ general check-ups were done in the camp. General check-up was aimed at looking for symptoms of more serious diseases. Free medicines were distributed for immediately addressable diseases. Based on the eye testing reports, free spectacles were distributed to needy patients.

No prizes for guessing the award for the day. As one of the Rotaract members said “Witnessing the joy of the old lady who could see at her grand daughter clearly again”.
